ANGOULÊME
Et mes cartes postales
Inspired by some of my long time heroes in animation and film (Michael Dudok de Wit, and Wes Anderson to name a few) who have spent time in this city. I set out a quest to find out what’s in these French waters. Resulting in a stack of painted postcards and some recordings of everyday life. Prendre plaisir, et merci beaucoup Angoulême!

The city of image
With this self proclaimed title, Angoulême a city of little over 40.000 people is the capital of the Charente department. It’s the home base of thirty animation studios and once a year Europe’s biggest comics festival.
Why Angoulême?
I love making projects about places, foreign or close to heart. Looking for the extraordinary in ordinary life. When I found out the town gave birth to the Red Turtle, Les Triples de Belville and The French Dispatch, I felt a strong creative pilgrimage quest.
The sketchbook
As the weather still allowed me to draw outside in November, I happily took my sketchbook out for a walk.

Digital colouring
As happy as I was with the sketches, turning them into a story or elevating them with colour just din’t seem to happen.
The acrylic experiment
After the struggles of finding a fitting colour scheme digitally, I started experimenting with some newly bought acrylic paint. The set colours of the acrylic paint gave me a nice construct to work with.

Mes cartes postales
In the end I decided to focus on the creation of custom postcards for friends and family. Hoping to sharing my joy and experience of the city in A5 format. Here you can find a couple them, next to there original source of inspiration.
